BALISUPERHOST STATEMENT ON BALI GOVERNOR’S AIRBNB ANNOUNCEMENT

UBUD, BALI — BaliSuperHost has reviewed Governor Wayan Koster’s recent statement regarding plans to regulate Airbnb operations in Bali, made during the 15th Regional Conference of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) on 3 December 2025, when Tjok Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati (Cok Ace) was reelected as PHRI Bali chairman for the 2025-2030 term.

Ian Luqi Liu, Managing Director of BaliSuperHost, commented: “We view the Governor’s emphasis on tax contribution positively. BaliSuperHost has been proactive in establishing proper tax frameworks for Airbnb properties and has long advocated for mandatory tax compliance across all villa management operations. If this initiative leads to standardized tax requirements industry-wide, it would create a more level playing field that we fully support.”

Regarding Implementation and Legal Context:

Anak Agung Ngurah Jlantik Parandita, Legal Manager at BaliSuperHost, provided additional perspective: “Governor Koster’s announcement appears to be a negotiating position rather than an immediate policy directive. The Governor made these remarks during a PHRI event, indicating intent to engage with Airbnb on regulatory matters. Had this been a definitive policy action, we would have seen a draft Peraturan Daerah (regional regulation) already in circulation.”

“Digital platform regulation in Indonesia typically falls under the purview of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) at the national level, which means significant policy changes in this area would generally require coordination across multiple levels of government. Governor Koster has previously issued public statements on related matters that served more as policy signals than immediate regulatory actions. This announcement appears to be part of a broader stakeholder engagement strategy, potentially designed to initiate dialogue with platform operators and other relevant parties about tourism management concerns in Bali.”
